Introduction
Welcome to the SCANIA Road Safety Programme. The Guildford Flames, in conjunction with Surrey Police, have been successfully running a drug awareness programme throughout Surrey’s primary schools for 17 years. The club extended its Youth Programme initiative to offer a road safety version for Reception year pupils beginning in 2009-2010.
SCANIA Road Safety is presented to 4 and 5 year old pupils, giving them valuable information on staying safe whilst in proximity to roads. The programme uses materials and publications from the Department for Transport ‘THINK Road Safety’ scheme to ensure that all information given is accurate and up to date, whilst keeping the delivery as lively and bright as possible. Following each presentation the children are offered a bag containing further information for parents, activity sheets for the children, as well as stickers and vouchers.
As with 'Drug Freeze', the message objective is that the hockey players use their equipment to help prevent getting injured during games while the information delivered on road safety will help the children to protect themselves from getting injured on or around the roads.
The Visit
The visit lasts approximately 30 minutes. The presentation includes a brief “show and tell” of a player’s equipment, a short video on road safety and some fun games/exercises to keep the children actively involved in the visit.
